In 2018-2020 while I was coaching junior hockey, I began to see a team play quite differently from what was considered normal. So, I watched every game they played over 3 seasons.

I began to see a few things emerge. And it wasn't structure and formation. It was something else.

Principles, not systems.

Don't think 1-2-2, think 'draw 2, play through'. The first is a 'system'. The second is a concept that guides player intention and attention:

For example on offense, principles of play include space/spacing. 2 components of this principle are:

1. Building Space
2. Filling Space

When your players understand things from a principles framework, players are more free to act on what is in front of them, instead of 2nd guessing if the coach wants to see a certain 'play' made.
