Our alignment wasn’t limited to our goals. It was also present in our beliefs. We believe coaching can be better. We believe player development can be better. We believe the user experience can be better. Overall, we believe the state of hockey and other sports can be better. And this is where our conversations got exciting. Diving into our beliefs, we often would fly down rabbit holes, discussing where things are at, where they are excelling, and where they can be improved. A lot of the ideas we talked about became motivation for Drew to write this book. Our conversations revealed something.
A wave. And it is coming.
When I think of the New Wave Coach, I see someone who doesn’t accept the status quo, but smashes through it in pursuit of the best answer. I see someone who leads with value, not to showcase their knowledge, but to create genuine relationships, that will spark discussion and learning. As said by Kori Cheverie, Assistant Coach with Team Canada Women’s Hockey team, and the first female coach for a male Canadian team, “I see someone who doesn’t need to be a know it all, but a learn it all.” I see someone who doesn’t respond to your email based on what your job in hockey is, but someone who responds to genuinely get to know you and learn from you.
